Anteprima della tesi: An examination of pollution Costs to Society in a Market Economy, and the possible ways to reduce its effects to the Society
An examination of pollution Costs to Society in a Market Economy, and the possible ways to reduce its effects to the Society CHAPTER ONE. III BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Environmental pollution has become of great concern to the modern society and governments, as well as business enterprises. The emission of wastes into the natural environment causes serious environmental concerns to sustainability. The natural environment can only handle a certain threshold of wastes. As a result, there arises need for ways and methods aimed at minimising the negative effects of pollution. Businesses operate in society. As a result of their activities, the environment is polluted. This pollution has a cost to society in a market system. It would therefore be argued, although not without controversy, that all businesses owe society their existence – a view dismissed by extreme capitalists who believe that businesses exist to make profits and maximise the wealth of shareholders. VIII PROBLEM STATEMENT It is a fact that pollution has reached alarming levels. Its sources are varied, for instance ...
... accepted that a certain level of pollution is inevitable, and effort should be in finding ways of minimising pollution and its effects.
Investment in technology should be encouraged to combat pollution. However, every technological change has its dangers and a careful examination of the possible side effects of technological change should be examined before technological changes are made.
There should be a cap on the amounts of emissions that any single firm can release to the environment in any given period of time.
Greater international cooperation should be encouraged to find a common ground on the best ways to deal with the issue of pollution.
