Preview of the essay: The Direct Effects of Family Ownership on Knowledge Sharing

The aim of this research was to investigate the direct effects of family ownership on knowledge sharing (Zahra et al., 2007). These were mediated through four crucial factors; the Information Technology system setup (Workman, 2007), an organization’s incentive and reward system (Chrisman et al., 2007), organizational culture (Cristina and Birkinshaw, 2004) and leadership in the regional electronic enterprise (Zhang et al., 2008). A combination of such factors is an important ingredient in the pursuit of a competitive organization. Competitiveness and the enhancement of competitive advantage are important for any firm that hopes to survive in the current rapidly changing economic environment of the world. This chapter discusses the results and answers the research questions ...

... research sought to gain a greater understanding of the extent to which family ownership impacts on knowledge sharing. In so doing, the research measured the following effects: mediated effect of family ownership on knowledge sharing through organizational culture, transformation leadership, incentive systems and information technology system setup in electronic industry in China. Multivariate analyses were used to determine the relationships among all these effect. The results of this empirical research support the generalization of the empirical outcome from Zahra (2007), which is a major contribution to the literature on the relationship between knowledge sharing and family ownership. The results also confirm the significant impact of family ownership on knowledge sharing mediated through transformational leadership and information technology system setup, which is congruent with that of other studies (Hasanali, 2005); (Horak, 2001); (Yang, 2007); (Wong, 2005); (Sher et al, 2004); (Szulanski et al., 1996); (Allwood et al., 1998); (Vallejo, 2008); (Sorensen, 2002); (Ogbonna et al, 2005); (Zahra et al., 2007); (Zahra et al., 2008).In conclusion, this research not only provides useful information for management when formulating their strategic knowledge sharing policies, but also provides a theoretical framework for future knowledge sharing studies.
