Anteprima della tesi: ANALYSIS OF THE HANDICRAFT INDUSTRY
ANALYSIS OF THE HANDICRAFT INDUSTRY CHAPTER ONE 1.1.1 Porter’s Five Forces Model The emergence of strategy has led to a new thinking in the area of industry analysis. Porter (1980) developed the Five Force industry analysis Model, which has a theory that there are five forces that determine competition in an industry. These forces form the basic characteristics of competition in an industry. Hence the strongest competitive force determines the profitability of an industry and its importance in strategy formulation. By far, the Five Forces Model, which forms the basis of this study, is the most influential and widely used framework for evaluating industry attractiveness. Essentially, Porter (1980) postulates that there are five forces that typically shape the industry structure: intensity of rivalry among competitors, threat of new entrants, threat of substitutes, bargaining power of buyers, and bargaining power of suppliers. These forces together with other context-specific forces (government, logistics, and information technology) as identified by Aosa (1997) and McFarlan (1984), will be the conceptual framework (as expounded in the literature) on which this study will be based. The five competitive forces reflect the fact the competition in an industry goes well beyond the established players. All the ...
... descriptive nature of data that will be collected, the study will use descriptive statistical tools of analysis. To measure the strength of the forces that define the structure of the industry, cluster analysis will be used. This entails organizing variables and their relationships in measuring the extent to which they are related in describing a particular factor/force, which will then be used to describe the structure of the industry. Variables defining a particular factor/force will be grouped into clusters and used to measure the strength of the factor/force. The strength of a factor/force will be measured by way of mean scores of each of the variables describing the factor/force. Analyzed data will be presented in tables to summarize the findings.
