Feudalism Feudalism refers to a hierarchical leadership system, where a lord or king gives a gift or land known in Latin as a feudum to a vassal, i.e. a knight, to buy for his protection. Medieval Europe was characterized with feudalism type of leadership although most of the qualities, such as who owns what and why, go unnoticed. Feudum were originally a mere composition of the military items and goods, such as armor, weaponry, and horses. This changed by A.D. 1000, increasing the contents of a feudum to pieces of land which were known as fiefs. Beginning from this period, Europe relied so much on agricultural practice as a source of wealth creation; land was then seen as a source of status to those who owned it. Fief was also given to a vassal by his lord as away of turning a vassal into a member of the upper class, as well as a symbol of a gift bestowed to the Vassal it became very ......
