THE ARISTOCRATIC FEUDAL ETHOS 1.0 INTRODUCTION The Medieval period refers to the time of European period from about 500AD to 1500AD. This is a period considered by many to be a time of zealous Christianity, a period of emergence of various types of art and cultural advancements in humanity. The advancements in medicine, law, music and weapons in this period were slowly being improved in this era though it was still considered a period of darkness because it did not advance in the age of new reasoning and creativity. The most profound elements that still kept the Medieval period under the Dark Age is the constant unhygienic conditions which caused diseases, warfare which was so common and Christianity. The Europeans for example were known for there lack of personal hygiene and therefore ailing from diseases caused due to lack of hygiene were so common amongst them during this period. ... period too the peasants Revolt, after they realized their worth, they demanded for change (Mumford, 1986). This led to the grant of charters which were ignored by the noble class in the society. The increase in trade activities led to the rise of more towns, where the peasants migrated to seeking for freedom. Land was rented to them and the rights of lords over labour decreased thus making the lords have a low dominance on the peasants as they had done before. The Feudal tax was unpopular and as time passed by the Nobles’ ideal choice was to pay the King rather than to battle and raise troops. The armed men- mercenaries were paid wages and at this time medieval warfare was funded by taxes and loans.
