Slavery was the major cause of the American Civil war because for many years slavery was mostly concentrated in the southern colonies which had the growing of tobacco as its major production therefore slave trade was chiefly for labor and as Sydney said "Had there been no slavery, there would have been no war. Had there been no moral condemnation of slavery, there would have been no war." (Ahlstrome, 1972). During this time, up to a third of the population was composed of slaves as compared to the south where slaves accounted for approximately 2% of the population. Before the civil war which was credited for bringing to an end of slave trade and slavery as whole, the United States economy depended on slavery which was composed of Africans and American.
