Themes in Huxley's ' Words and Behaviour'

The major themes in Aldous Huxley's 'Words and Behaviour' are related to the application of words and the other sub themes , in one way or another, are related to it. Huxley tells us in detail how human beings use words for the advantages of their own and how dreadful effects of atrocities like war can even be minimized by word play.

Anteprima della tesi: Themes in Huxley's ' Words and Behaviour'

WORDS AND BEHAVIOR By Aldous Huxley Themes Aldous Huxley was one of the most versatile and prolific writer of the twentieth century. His genius was many-sided and he produced poetry, short stories, novels, travel books, essays, biographies, philosophical works and so on. Using the style of Eclectics, in his essays he covered an enormous range not only of form but of subject-matter. His essays are relevant to the situation in his time and ours, and give us a real view of the intellectual life of the western man during the period in which they were written. It was a time of revolution and upheaval. It was a time of the knowledge explosion which was bringing forth the new revolutionary ideas. The essay Words and Behavior is a contribution to Huxley’s anti-war writings. It was published in The Olive Tree (1936). Huxley in this essay contends that it is wrong and unfair to cover up or conceal the reality of war by using words and expressions designed to throw a veil over the facts. Huxley strongly opposes ...

... Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Watch your words, for they become actions. Watch your actions, for they become habits. Watch your habits, for they become character. Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny. In conclusion we can say that Huxley’s essay is marked by a moral earnestness, an intellectual honesty, a strong rationality and a penetrating insight into problems. This essay was written at the time of Huxley’s conversion to pacifism. In it he asserts that war cannot be the solution of any world issue even if against aggressive dictators because they always result in the destruction of innocent masses. Moreover he pronounces the different functions of words saying that ideas, feelings or thoughts are abstract concepts if not converted into words and on the other hand, words can also be used to transform the realities into mere abstractions so as to hide the hideousness of the adverse actions such as war. Huxley despises the latter use of words. He believes that thinking appropriately can only lead to positive behaviors.
