A REVIEW OF ‘IMPERIALISM, THE HIGHEST STAGE OF CAPITALISM’ BY V.I, LENIN INTRODUCTION Imperialism is a social phenomenon and a reality for that matter. People come together and practice it hence it is argued to be as old as human king. Some scholars divide imperialism into two phases, namely; the classical and modern phases. Here it is the period in time when imperialism took place that matters. According to Lenin, Imperialism is the latest phase of capitalist development. In 1890 to 1913, the railway was distributed all over the world. As a matter of fact, railways combine within themselves the basis capitalist industries. Lenin gives examples of also the most striking index of the development of international trade and bourgeoisie-democratic civilization (1972:10). It is the development, which sums up the modern world monopolist capitalism. Under this economic system, imperialist ware is absolutely inedible. Other critics of Marxist theories argue that domination of one society over another is a social and not an economic phenomenon. Imperialism is as a result of exploitation of advantages of every kind where people see no more equity in the sharing of resources. In short, their argument is that imperialism is a combination of many forces contrary to what Lenin asserts in his reactions to the world Wars one and two. The Wars were not only caused by the economic factors as Lenin argues. The vacuum created by Lenin should be filled with other theories so as to give a fair system of imperialism. Nevertheless, this may not terminate the debate. In summary it depends on the solidness of facts given by the author.
