Anteprima della tesi: DISCUSS THE STRENGHTS AND WEAKNESSES OF THE COHERENCE THEORY OF HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE OR FACT

DISCUSS THE STRENGHTS AND WEAKNESSES OF THE COHERENCE THEORY OF HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE OR FACT According to marc Block, the past does not entirely account for the present. However, he who confines his thoughts to present time will not understand present reality (1963:34). This implies that the past as a whole cannot be object of science without distillation or rather rational knowledge. Reality cannot be understood better than through its causes. Hence, the line between the present and past is no longer strictly regulated by a mathematically measurable chronology. It is by understanding the present by the past and vice versa thus misunderstanding of the present is the inevitable consequence of ignorance of the past. The historians cannot escape the common law of the mind, that is, ‘why’ and ‘because’. This follows that there are many causes, which are just necessary, but one is distinguishing from the rest by ...

... note that historical judgment, whatever its superstructure, has its foundation in a peculiar sort of experience. According to Walsh, this is a kind of experience in which we have access to the past though no direct vision of it (1960:90). All said and done, we as historians’ should be aware of attacks from both sides. Taking the intermediate position may ad well be dangerous in search of historical knowledge. The sentiments are supported by the opinion that truth about the past is in principle attainable by the historian but there are many difficulties that can prevent his attaining in practice.
