ECONOMIC GROWTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION: THE KUZNET CURVE HYPOTHESIS

As nations across the world gears towards industrialization, effect of economic growth on environmental quality is much under dispute. A number of empirical studies have made the claim that there exist in some income ranges a positive relation between per capita income and some measure of environmental quality. In this paper, I look critically at a hypothesis put forward by Simon Kuznet called the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis. (EKC). The hypothesis gives the relationship between economic growth and environmental degradation. I look at both the pros and cons of using the hypothesis to base developmental policies for developing economies.
