Anteprima della tesi: An Approach to Learning in Context

An Approach to Learning in Context Overview The scene is a hospital staff meeting. It is fifteen minutes after the starting time, and still the members have not turned their attention to the work at hand. The hospital administrator looks to the chief medical resident to get things started, but she is busy in conversation with one of the staff nurses about a patient treatment. After another five minutes have passed, the administrator attempts to pull the group together. As he starts, he feels a gnawing insecurity growing that he is not going to be able to get the group to accomplish what needs doing in the forty-five minutes left. Sure enough, side issues, personal bickering, and drifting attention all lead to an incomplete discussion. As the administrator tries to schedule a follow up meeting, half the members leave, including the chef resident, complaining that they are late for other work. The administrator feels defeated. The scenario is unfortunately all too familiar to anyone who has a work in grouped setting. While group work can be exciting and energizing, it can also generate frustration, anger, and even sense of hopelessness. How can an individual ...

... steps demand a willingness to own, acknowledge, and work with one’s experiences, thoughts, and feelings: all of them – the good, the bad, and the ugly. It is in some ways to ultimate “throwing oneself into the work.” Where then, does this leave the hospital administrator and the medical group portrayed at the beginning of this chapter? Though his membership experiences, he has access to information both about the group and about his own responses. Off-line, he can begin the process of analyzing the group and his responses and, at the next meeting can import his learning back into the group. Since interventions are always based on analysis, a more complete analytic process, one the leads on examining all the data, one that takes advantage of all four learning contexts, increases the probability that he can lead the group more effectively. “Effective” managerial behaviour then emerges not from simply following a generic management “cookbook” but from engaging a complex and demanding learning process to understand the dynamics of a specific group in a particular context.
