In this essay I will first explain what general industry analysis involves by looking at a firms environment and then proceed to looking at Michael Porter’s Five Forces Model of industry analysis describing what it entails. I will then assess whether his model is sufficient to be applied to firms in all industries, which will involve considering arguments for and against Porter’s theory.

To obtain a broader understanding of this topic, it will be necessary to examine an industry using the five forces model in addition to using other strategic frameworks of SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) and PEST (Political, Economic, Social, and Technological) analysis. This theory can also be used with the Resource-Based View (RBV) in order for the firm to develop a much more complete strategy.
