“Communication in every form is so much a part of man as man in the very depth of his being that it must always remain possible and one can never know how far it will go.” Karl Jappers, The Perennial Scope of Philosophy INTERNET CHATTING AND THEIR EFFECTS TO THE WRITING PROFICIENCY Introduction The word communication stems from the Latin word communicare, meaning to share, to have in common. A closely related Latin word, communion (communion in English) means fellowship or holding in common. Thus from the earliest times, communication and closely linked words such as commune, communion, and communicant have meant to share, to partake, to exchange or to hold in common. To day, as we enter the twenty-first century, this needs to share or hold in common in all aspects of human endeavor cannot be overemphasized. Mankind cannot survive if it does not communicate effectively and efficiently. In fact, all human society, primitive to modern is founded on man’s capacity to transmit his feelings, hopes, desires, knowledge and experience from person to person. At home, we enjoy newspapers, radio and television programs; in school, we speak, read, and write in a common language; ...





... prevalence in our society. These types of messaging technologies are widely used among adolescents today. This is quite an amazing change, given that ten years ago, instant messaging and text messaging were in their infancy, and cell phones were only readily available as tools for roadside assistance.
Given the newness of these types of technologies, it is only in the last few years that educators have started to notice them and explore their effects on student behavior and performance. While there is supporting evidence to suggest that these technologies have a large influence on the social development of adolescents, an even more pertinent issue for classroom teachers is what effects these technologies have on the academic development of young people.
