Peace, Glasnost, and Perestroika Introduction This paper is centered on the philosophy of Mikhail Gorbachev, chosen by Time as Man of the Decade, and awarded Nobel Prize for peace, January, 1990. It is within the context of news reports of transcendental significance – such as the fall and demise of communism in Russia, following the aborted coup ouster of Soviet President Gorbachev; the dissolution of the USSR, and now the resignation of Gorbachev as Soviet President that this paper is written. Gorbachev’s leadership may have already sunk into the nadir of insignificance, and Gorbachev the man, may soon slip away into the oblivion, but his philosophy remains a part of history’s political philosophy. ... making revolutionary changes, the only way to attain peace, Gorbachev can claim that he is only thinking along the lines of the dialectic, rather than illegally traveling from it. “Having peace,” for instance, can be the thesis that can be negated by any antithesis, say, “revolution,” which can be negated further by a peaceful non-violent revolution – the negation of the negation. Be that as it may, there exists one thing, which I believe is clear: there may be some flaws and loopholes along this intricate line of reasoning, but the impact of Gorbachev’s philosophy of peace left an indelible impression to the community of nations in the world.
