Anteprima della tesi: Ethics and Education

EDUCATION AND SOCIETY’S COMMITMENT Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence and third President of the United States, said: “Educate and inform the whole mass of people. They are the only reliance for the preservation of liberty”. The preservation and perpetuation of a free way of life depends heavily upon the educational system of the country. If it is to meet this great opportunity, education must be undergirded by understanding and support. Daniel Webster, on the other hand, said: “If we work upon marble, it will perish, if on brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples, they will cramble into dust; but if we work upon immoral minds, and imbue them with principles, with the just fear of God and love of our fellow-men, we engrave on those tablets something that will brighten to all eternity.” Aim of Education. The aim of education, in the words of one writer is or should be to teach us rather how to think, than what to think, to enable the mind to think for itself rather than to be led by the thoughts of other men. ... a professor to break unilaterally an existing contract which is based upon a verbal agreement in order to accept another position elsewhere which offers better pay and fringe benefits. It is likewise improper, if not unethical, for faculty members to fraternize with their students. This is a common fault committed by some faculty members. Some faculty members are so fond of extra-curricular activities that they are not averse to having fun and getting together with their students in picnics and excursions. Those who refuse to fraternize with students are oftentimes labeled as “terrors” and the like. Obviously, a breach of professional ethics not only rings up moral lapse for an individual teacher or professor, but it casts a shadow of doubt on his character and thereby weakens the whole body of the teaching profession. In most breaches of professional ethics, there is no infraction of any statute or law. Thus there are no remedies enforceable by law. This is unfortunate.
