INTRODUCTION   Herbal medicine   Herbal remedy is the use of medicinal plants for prevention and treatment of diseases: it ranges from traditional and popular medicines of every country to the use of standardized and titrated herbal extracts. Plants are a valuable source of natural products for maintaining human health and the use of plant compounds for pharmaceutical purposes has been increasing. According to the WHO (World Health Organization), medical plants would be the best source to obtain a variety of drugs1. The use of traditional system of medicine has been enduring for several years and it mostly relies on the active principles of the remedies. Generally they have been found to be safe but there is no much evidence for the efficacy of herbal medicines. Herbal derived medicines need a reliable and deep assessment of their safety and pharmacological qualities. This can actually be realized by new biologic technologies like pharmaco genomic, metabolomic and microarray methodology. Even though the naturally derived substances are being used widely, it is not wise to rely only on the folklore claim of the substances. Descriptive and pragmatic studies are needed complementary for the acquirement of consistent data both for health ...

... MICELLE FORMULATION) USING PARALLEL ARTIFICIAL MEMBRANE ASSAY (PAMPA)   The permeation of Andrographis (40% extract and micelle formulation) across a lipid bilayer at pH 7.4 was determined by PAMPA using the same standard protocol followed for Punica granatum study. In brief, PAMPA was performed using 96-well hydrophilic filtration plates. Filter material was prepared by wetting each well of the filtration plate with 5 µL of the artificial membrane solution (1% egg lecithin in n-dodecane). The donor and recipient solutions consisted of phosphate-buffered saline (pH 7.4).   Sample preparation   Concentration tested: 100µg/mL of Andrographolide   The sample of conventional extract (40% Andro) and formulation (860µg/100µL Andro) was prepared in PBS and the required concentrations of 100µg/mL were made from the stock 1 mg/mL. The samples were sonicated for 15 min and the resulting suspension was used for the study.   Sample analysis The test protocol and procedure was performed in the same manner as followed for Punica granatum and the sample collected from the wells were mixed with 250µL of methanol which was sonicated and centrifuged at 10000 rpm for 5 min and the supernatant was analysed using HPLC.
