CODE SWITCHING AMONG THIRD YEAR AB ENGLISH STUDENTS: IT’S EFFECT IN THEIR PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH Rationale English is a second language to most Filipinos. Teaching English effectively requires objectives, curriculum materials, techniques, procedures and activities different from those employed in teaching English to native speakers. There are objectives that call for different curriculum materials, techniques, procedures and activities. To realize the objectives of equipping the Filipino child with the ability and skills to recognize, produce and respond sounds and patterns in English, methodologies utilized in foreign language teaching (Martin, 2002). Andrew Gonzalez on “An Overview of Language Development” elucidates this in this manner: “In the Philippines, English proficiency may be considered an indication that an individual has mastered a particular intellectual skill. Because English is not the native language, English is linguistically very different from the native language and the use of English is not largely supported in the social environment so mastery of English is indeed and intellectual feat. Hence good students may end up mastering English better than weaker students. So there is a possible link between English proficiency and ...

e. By having the students participate in activities supportive of English such as the holding of English festivals, writing articles for the student paper/ organ, holding of debates/competitions requiring the use of English and encouraging an in-campus English campaign.
f. By strengthening the teaching of English in the AB English program through the hiring by school administration of highly qualified English teachers.
2. A similar study on a wider scope which will include students of other curricula or levels may be conducted by other researchers to validate the findings of this study.
