The Equestrian of Marcus Aurelius

As the equestrian stature had become the sample for many successive heroic memorials, it is necessary that such a meaningful statue would influence the passionate artists of the generations that followed the Roman civilization. Of these artists were Donatello di Niccolô and Leonardo Da Vincci. The statue of Gattamelata (the popular name of commander Erasmo da Narni) on horseback was created c. 1447-50 by Donatello (figure 8). He was inspired by the Statue of Marcus Aurelius in Rome. Another possibility is that he may have also been motivated by the Greek horses on top of the Venetian Church of St Mark's, as the Greek and the Roman civilizations shared the same iconography of depicting horses as an image of courage and honor.
