The Psycho-Social factors of Development Introduction The economic growth and development of a country is influenced in large measure by the psychological and social characteristics of the people on whose response depends the effectiveness of policies and programs. There are psycho-social qualities in a people that favor or deter development, economists and sociologists are agreed. Some of these psycho-social qualities are so strong that even the planners and implementers of development find them the positive blocks upon which to guide development or to signals for what must be avoided. Development in a democratic country is the outcome of popular response to incentives rather than the direction by government. Popular response is no easily predicted even in these times when the social sciences have worked out sophisticated ways of predicting human behavior. This is not to say that popular response to a plan should not be predicted. On the contrary, efforts must be exerted to estimate popular response so that certain safeguards can be factored into the plan to avoid the pitfall of running counter to well entrenched psycho-social values that may deter development ( Cheney and Srinivasan,1988). This societal flaw calls for the social organizations, the church, the school and the home to correct and to emphasize the economic gap between the majority “have-nots” and the minority “haves” in the less developed economy. There is also a need to emphasize that controlled spending is a contribution to development. A sense of patriotism connected with consumption, saving and investment can be the content of social restructuring of values in society. This task should also be addressed by the media whose message might as well be on the idea that the “Life of the rich and famous” should apply to those in the economically advanced societies , not to those who are in the midst of poverty. In the less developed country, even the rich have to understand the existence of the poor majority in their own social environment. How they can help through contributing to employment creation must be engrained in the rich.
