libel tourism
The use of London as the ‘libel capital of the world’ has raised concern with many groups, including the United Nations, over the ‘chilling’ effect this is having on the freedom of the press worldwide. Similar unease have been raised by politicians in the UK and abroad alike, resulting in the prospect of substantial reform to UK libel law in the near future as proposed by Jack Straw based on the findings of the culture, media and sport committee and the Libel Working Group. These proposals include a range of matters concerning the law of libel, however, the focus of the writer’s attention will be solely on possible change to the law to combat ‘libel tourism’ and the likely consequences any such development may have on the media worldwide.
