Anteprima della tesi: On the Essence and Structure of Poetry

Poetry is as varied as the nature of man---unique in some sense along with man’s eccentricities, yet clings if appreciated or if deeply imbibed by the reader. The following are diverse definitions of poetry. Wordsworth says, “Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings recollected in tranquility.” Poe thinks poetry is “the rhythmic creation of beauty.” Arnold avers that poetry is “the most perfect speech of man which comes nearest to uttering the truth.” Ruskin believes poetry is “the presentment in musical form to the imagination of noble grounds for noble emotions.” Shelley states poetry is “the record of the best and happiest moments of the happiest and best minds.” Sandburg opines, “it is the journal of the sea animal living on land, wanting to fly the air.” Robinson claims “it is the language that tells us through a more or less emotional reaction something that cannot be said.” ...

... iron, drawing into it whatever recollections are relevant in the association of ideas. Always behind little completed poems are the great wild continents of experience.

It is the power of the poet’s imagination to utter his emotional heightened state that the craft of poetry lies. A poem begins in man and must end outside of him. The poem must be alive and powerful, but it must be objectified into a poem of equal aliveness and force so that it is no longer a private utterance but a public statement.
