SWOT analysis on the management and development of Yala wetland agro-ecosystem in Bondo district , Kenya

This research project sought to explore the strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats facing the management of Yala wetland agro-ecosystem. Poverty and seasonal hunger is a phenomenon that is rampant and common in Nyanza province despite the productive viability of the region. The Yala wetland eco-system is one of this viable region faced with numerous challenges of securing constant and adequate household food supply. Agricultural growth and subsequently development is driven by the private sector and so the greatest challenge is to find ways of including the community and the poor.

The River Yala wetland ecosystem is delineated within the National Water Resources Management Strategy (NWRMS) and section 14 of the Water Act 2002 (Catchment Management Strategy, 2007).
A large portion of River Yala wetland has been reclaimed and is dominantly under cultivation either for commercial or subsistence agriculture. These form the main livelihood opportunities for sedentary rural communities. In commercial farmlands such as the Dominion farms, agriculture is done by farm machinery in large plantations of up to 3 700 hectares of wetland around the tributary of River Yala. Reclamation has been undertaken in an attempt to ease the poverty level by providing ...

... civil society official stated that both sexes are given equal employment opportunities especially in private owned farms where qualifications matter more than gender. The researcher also observed that there were females operating heavy machinery alongside their male counterparts. Within the management of the commercial farm, it was observed a fair distribution of both female and male employees. However, 26.7% of respondents disagreed on gender equality as being practiced. An unemployed male respondent stated that jobs predominantly male were being done by women for instance as security guards which was unfair on his part as they were now competing for the few ones that were available.
