‘Perceptions and ideas of belonging, or not belonging vary.’ How has your perception of the concept of belonging been shaped by your study of the prescribed text and one text of your own choosing. The convoluted notions of belonging and its antithetic concept of isolation are primarily orientated with the interaction between individuals and the environment they are emersed in. Portrayed in Raimond Gaita’s memoir ‘Romulus, My Father’, the concept of idiosyncrasy and ‘character’ orientated belonging, is explored through the contrasting experiences of the embracive Gaita and his alienated and myopic father.
