This era mostly was to bring about various changes where some families feared that their innocent farm daughters could be lured into sexual lifestyles that entailed prostitution teeming with illiterate men. Sexuality matters The new woman emerged to promote the practice of effective birth control, regulate sexual prostitution, prevent the spread of venereal disease, and reduce the habitual sexual double standard. Black women were assumed to be promiscuous but this seemed not the case since they had been prone to sexual abuse by their white male owners when in slavery while in slavery and even after it was long ended.
