OBJECTIVE To design, construct and test an electronic device for controlling the speed of a d.c. series motor. With aim on: (1) To allow the operator of the motor to have access to affective and efficient method of speed control. (2) To come up with a cost effective method of speed control as compared to those prevailing in the market.

CHAPTER ONE 1.0.0 SPEED CONTROL OF A DC SERIES MOTOR 1.1.0 INTRODUCTION In many industrial and domestic appliances motor either use d.c. or a.c. supply. An electric motor will convert electrical energy to mechanical energy. Its operation is based on the principle that when a current carrying conductor is placed in a magnetic field it experiences mechanical force whose direction is given by Fleming’s left hand rule. Motors are widely used in industries to drive loads. A particular motor may be used to drive a certain load, also variable speeds may be required for various applications, thus the need to vary the speed of a motor. This will make the motor to be used for various applications. In this project a d.c. series motor is used. some of the application of this motor is in tracton work that is in electric locomotives, rapid transit systems, trolley cars e.t.c. Its also used in cranes and hoists and in conveyors. This motor is a d.c. motor. This means that an alternating supply voltage will be rectified into d.c. Some of the principle characteristics of the series d.c. motor is that it has high starting torque variable ......
