SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT Background Extensive literature exist on supply chain management affirming the significance of the process in which raw materials are acquired, transformed and delivered to customers, (Lambert & Cooper 1998, 2). Its evolution into a major business issue which when handled with correct magnitude leads to better financial results in a company was warranted, (Lambert & Cooper 1998, 2 and Harland 64). Its functional activities are aimed at procurement and sales issues in an organization, (Fox, Berbuceanu & Rune 166). Effective supply chain is a major requirement in all firms in order to remain relevant and competitive in the current market, (Houlihan 23). Both Houlihan (23) and Mentzer, DeWitt, Keebler, Min, Nix, Smith, and Zacharia (2) affirm that the standard definition of supply chain management as the; process of finding raw materials for production of goods and services, manufacturing of the goods, transfer of the manufactured products to the customers including the middle-men and continued flow of ...





... though many software applications have been developed globally, it is hard to find one that incorporates all the five components of supply chain management covered above.
SAP a leading global software development company manufactured its supply chain management software under the name Advanced Planner and Optimizer which is able to carry out quite a number of the components of the supply chain management, (Thomas & Griffin 8). While supply chain management software are regarded as a milestone in this sector, their use also has several draw backs. The software require people who are conversant with computers and must be well trained on using the software. The results that will be produced by the software will depend on the genuinity of the information that is supplied to the system. This implies that care must be taken while handling this software so as to avoid wrong decisions, (Aquino and Draper 12 and Lambert & Cooper 66).
