THE VULNERABILITY OF A PART OF THE COAST OF AUSTRALIA TO THE IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

Climatic change effects have become a common feature in the recent past as these impacts are evident in the day to day living. This has been occurring through lack of rains for long periods of time during dry seasons that are not consistent with the weather calendar. A similar or even worse situation is encountered in parts of Australian coast including Victorian coast where high temperatures than the expected have become the norm. These temperatures are followed by the EL Nino which causes great damages within and on the areas surrounding the coast. Other signs of Australian coast vulnerability include a situation where the sea level has been rising, ecosystem changes, and health as well as heritage issues.

Anteprima della tesi: THE VULNERABILITY OF A PART OF THE COAST OF AUSTRALIA TO THE IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

THE VULNERABILITY OF A PART OF THE COAST OF AUSTRALIA TO THE IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE Introduction The Australian coast is one region where the population has continued to increase by the day, rendering the area and its surroundings to be under great pressure. Its population has been increasing due to the features as well as activities being practiced within the region including infrastructure, fisheries, tourism, mangroves, coastal wetlands, coral reefs as well as estuaries. “Climate change has posed significant effects on this region which tend to challenge sustainability of Australian coast and there is a high probability that the current developmental patterns within the ...

... gets even worse since the heavy rainfall commonly known as El Nino sweeps off houses and properties even to a point where some people loose their lives. Coastal erosion also takes place during flooding which accumulates sand in to the sea that in turn contributes to rising of sea level. All these show how natural and human activities are causing climatic changes that render part of Australian coast vulnerable (Ahmad, 2008 pp 16).
