King Richard III Essay

Al Pacino’s directorial debut ‘Looking for Richard’ (1996) is a drama documentary to make William Shakespeare’s ‘Richard 111’ (1591) more accessible to the contemporary audience. When comparing the differences between these texts it is essential to consider how textual connections and stylistic approaches have been utilised to contemporise Shakespeare’s original tragedy. Through explanation and appropriation of characters, themes and motifs the film production process becomes a means of exploring and accessing the depths of Shakespeare’s tragedy. Furthermore an analysis of conventions, characters and themes presented in the film allows for a comparison of the connections between the two texts.

... Richard’ and its adaption of Shakespeare’s ‘Richard 3’ the readership are offered a deeper understanding into the ways in which texts connect to one another. The spectator is shown that in both film and theatre the production process becomes of paramount importance. Through both texts questioning of deception as resolving wrongs and their adaptation of one another, the play and film become interlinking works, proving Shakespeare’s relevance to contemporary society.
