Depending on the environment in which one is able to find identity and connection, an individual’s response to navigating their way through the global varies. While one such as Quoyle may navigate away from the global into the security of the local, it seems imperative that some connection with the global remains, and in some cases especially in terms of economic development it is necessary that the global is focused on rather than the local as it may seem stifling and narrow-minded. As it is impossible to predict each individual’s response to globalization and localised communities, and the relationship between the two so complex it appears inevitable they must compromise in order to benefit all involved.
