Anteprima della tesi: SOCIAL-CULTURAL AND ECONOMIC COROLLARIES OF IDENTITY IN KEN KAMOCHE’S A FRAGILE HOPE

The focus will be on identity issues in literature, between individuals whose interactions are mediated by socio-cultural and economic forces. The main interest of this study is to explore the levels at which Kamoche approaches questions of identity and the implicit motive or statement he articulates in his short story collection A Fragile Hope. It will further examine how individuals renegotiate geographical and social spaces in an age of increasing transnational connections and globalisations. Kamoche’s vision for these individuals will be critiqued. The study, therefore, aims at investigating what and how he writes and whom he addresses in each selected story. The study will address different ways individuals look at the world and how the world looks at them in their Migritude condition. The assumption being that these individuals experience historical, economic, sociological and emotional realities in various environments from either white or black people. Their heritage and the context they locate themselves determines a new self, making them constantly search for identity in a manner that reflects a fragile hope in cultural ...

... study will attempt to evaluate the problematics of postcolonial identity, including the relationship between personal and cultural identity.
The study will further interrogate specific stories to find out what they reveal about the operations of cultural difference – the ways in which race, class, cultural beliefs, gender, sexual orientation and customs combine to form individual identity – in shaping our perceptions of ourselves, others and the world in which we live.

1.8 METHODOLOGY
This study will be based on library research. This will be mainly a conceptual study. One level of the study will involve access and use of relevant materials on theoretical framework and literature review from various libraries that will offer relevant materials. This preliminary level is fundamental to the collection, review and assessment of secondary material.

The other level of the study will be reading, analysing and interpreting stories in Kamoche’s collection A Fragile Hope as primary sources. These stories will be subjected to a contrapuntal reading. The study approaches the short story collection as a model of representation crafted by Ken Kamoche as an African writer in transcultural contexts. How the short stories in the collection reflect Kamoche’s own experiences and those of others to render a variety of identities through the prism of these contexts in his nomadology will be critiqued.
