A HISTORY OF VOTING PATTERNS IN KENYA’S ELECTIONS IN ALDAI CONSTITUENCY OF SOUTH-NANDI DISTRICT.

This study is concerned with the voting patterns and trends in Aldai constituency. The objectives of the study were; firstly, to study the legacy and impact of colonial electoral process on voting patterns in early elections in Kenya, with specific reference to Aldai constituency. Secondly, to analyze the trend in voting patterns in Aldai constituency in the context of the country’s changing political history in the period 1963-2002. Thirdly, to investigate factors influencing voting patterns in Kenya’s elections at grassroots level (constituency and ward) within this period and finally to examine the relevance of the study to the rest of the country. The subaltern theory is the main interrogative tool that probes various aspects and elements of politics in Aldai. This, hopefully, illuminates the ‘change’ taking place among the electorate themselves. The study proceeds from the assumption that there are changes that have occurred on the voter trends and behavior. The study also takes cognizance of the dominance by the political elite on the political praxis in the country since independence. Primary and secondary sources of data were examined for this study; broadly categorized into oral and written sources. Primary sources were gathered from; oral in-depth interview, archival materials, observation, and questionnaires. The target population was both randomly and purposively sampled. Secondary sources included mainly written sources viz; published books, unpublished theses, periodicals, seminar papers, newspapers, maps, magazines and dissertations. The findings of this research are; firstly, that the colonial boundary making exercise in Aldai laid grounds for chaos that plague the region. Secondly, that colonialism impacted heavily on the area’s political behaviour. Thirdly, that the political subaltern is gaining more control of his/her vote unlike the case in the elections before 2002. Fourthly, that a whole range of factors including clan, wealth, ethnic group and personality affect the voting patterns. Finally, that the land issue needs to be tackled in Aldai.

Anteprima della tesi: A HISTORY OF VOTING PATTERNS IN KENYA’S ELECTIONS IN ALDAI CONSTITUENCY OF SOUTH-NANDI DISTRICT.

CHAPTER ONE 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background to the Study Politics, the world over, proceeds from the same logic of ambitions, aspirations for power and domination by human beings. The forms and expression of these political relations are of course different but none of them is unique. Although they are the result of different historical trajectories which shaped the way people think and the way they talk, none of them is fundamentally or substantially different (Bacot, 1993:9). There are many forms of participation in the parlance of ‘democratic politics’ for instance voting, political parties, lobbying, and civil societies. But none comprehensively brings out the veracity in opinions of members of a polity like the voting exercise. Voting is a privileged moment of political interaction between the rulers and the ruled in any country and reveals a lot about its political culture (Grignon, Rutten and Mazrui, 2001:3). In real fact, the level and quality of this interaction determines the kind of politics that evolves in a society. The act of voting, as it is performed now in Western societies, is the product of a political socialization intimately linked with the changes of ...

... confidentiality of the voter, this should include age, sex, race, ethnic group and profession. This can go a long way in getting reliable, detailed and varied data/information on the voter choices and factors behind these choices. This is important for research aimed at disaggregating the various aspects of voting for instance; the male and female vote, the youth, middle aged and the aged in order to more clearly understand the voting patterns in Aldai.

Finally, further research is required in Aldai area to document the history of the Terik occupants. Though all the other Kalenjin groups have a written history, there is no history written of the Terik. This is in spite the fact that the area they occupy (Aldai) is known to have been the major dispersal area of Kalenjin speaking peoples in the 17th century as discussed earlier in this work. Secondly, there is need for the history of land tenure and historical cross border interactions in Aldai area to be studied. Also, there is actually no well researched historical information on very important Nandi leaders like Jean Marie Seroney, Koitalel Arap Samoei, John Chemallan, Simeon Kiptum Arap Choge and Chelagat Mutai among others.
