ANALYSIS OF THE STRATEGIES ADOPTED BY TELKOM KENYA IN RESPONSE TO COMPETITION ABSTRACT Kenya’s telecommunication industry has continued to give guidelines on the expected standards to which the various telecommunication companies should adhere to. This classification by the telecommunication companies has brought in application of generic competitive strategies. Some studies reveal that a telecommunication’s competitive strategy influences its development practices. This research study sought to establish the managers’ perception towards the range of strategies being adopted by the telecommunication industry players in Nairobi as well as the factors that influence the challenges in its implementation. Specifically the study explored the following questions (i) what is the managers perception regarding the current level of competition in the Telecommunication industry? (ii) What is the level of managers’ awareness regarding the actions of their competitors in Telecommunication Industry? (iii) What are the ranges of strategies that have been adopted in response to competitors’ actions? The study used descriptive survey to assist the researcher in identifying the generic strategies employed by Telkom Kenya in Nairobi. The population under study comprised of all the main three Telkom regions in Kenya using convenience sampling. The study mainly ...





... Telecommunication Industry. These were cash flow problems, lack of full management support, and political instability. Inconsistent customer tastes was also a key factor. In responding to these challenges, it can be concluded that the cost involved in countering competition was considered as the most important factor while location and environmental factors are also important.
5.6 Suggestions for Further Research
The researcher highly recommends for a synthesis of study, that would focus on individual variables of Porter’s Generic Framework e.g. cost leadership or product differentiation. If a future researcher were to look at these variables separately, then the findings would yield very valuable results on competitive advantage strategies in Telkom Kenya.
