... hotel industry in the US still grapples with negative publicity and human resource relations as hotel related careers are still viewed low- wage occupation with little prospects for career advancement. As a result most qualified workers take to other careers making recruitment more difficult. The hotel industry is therefore face with an intensive image building to attract its workforce in competition with the other sectors assumed to lucrative. Consequently, qualified workers, especially youth, are unaware the range of hospitality careers available. Recruitment in the hotel industry has historically benefited from the influx of youth labor but with the shrinking in the workforce base as youths prefer other careers there has been a persistent in insufficiency in skills for the industry.
Most of the hotel labor in the US is supplied by immigrants of diverse culture and backgrounds. This has been a challenge for the hotel industry dealers who have to retrain their recruits in language proficiency skills since most of them do not speak. Employers in the hotel sector therefore have to incur additional costs in language training programs to allow workers to effectively perform their duties and interact with other employees or even understand hotel safety requirements.
