Anteprima della tesi: WORKPLACE BULLYING (HORIZONTAL VIOLENCE) AMONG RN'S AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH BURNOUT AND INTENT TO LEAVE CURRENT .

The concept of horizontal violence (HV) or bullying is a serious and complex issue which is often under-reported. Dunn (2003) reported HV as “sabotage directed at coworkers who are on the same level within an organizations hierarchy.” Horizontal Violence or bullying is not physical and is usually manifested in covert and overt hostility behaviors (Duffy, 1995; Freire, 1972). This behavior is common among the oppressed groups and can take place in any area so long as unequal power relations exists resulting into the control and suppression of underprivileged groups by the more powerful and prestigious individuals (Harcombe, 1999). This behavior can either be conscious or unconscious (Taylor, 1996). Horizontal violence damages the victim emotionally, physiologically and spiritually besides other prolonged effects (Wilkie, 1996). Though it may not be physical, it may include hitting, shoving and throwing ...

... measurement between independent demographic variables (age, gender, race, educational level, and years of working experience) in comparison with the dependent variable (bullying or horizontal violence), analysis of variance and t test will be used in the research study (Yildiz, Tuzunturk, & Giorgi, 2008).
Chapter 5
Recommendations and Conclusions
Bullying is one of the major problems faced by many workers. Freire theory of the oppressed is instrumental in helping us to understand the behavior of the oppressed in the workplace. According to Freire’s theory, oppression in the work place limits individual creativity and response to challenges in their work place. This study will aim at assessing bullying, nurse’s burnout, and intent to leave in among nurses in light of Freire model. The study will use a survey research design and data will be collected using questionnaires administered to 100 nurses who will be randomly selected among nurses working in a southern city. The results of the study will be analyzed using SPSS.
The researcher would like to recommend strict adherence to the ethical concerns in a research study since its dealing with human subjects. There should also be strict adherence to research timetable and timely release of research results so that they would to assist in improvement of nursing working environment.
