Characterizing Chinese Philosophy and Arts in Sixth Century B.C. In the three hundred years beginning with the sixth century B.C., the outstanding philosophical teachings of China were formulated. in India, philosophers emphasized metaphysics: speculation concerning the nature of the Absolute and its cosmic and human manifestations. Many Chinese philosophers, on the other hand, have been preoccupied with man rather than with the cosmos. These philosophers have considered man basically from the standpoint not of his spiritual origins and attributes but of his moral qualities as an individual and his ethical obligations as a member of society. Transported to China along with the Buddhist faith were the Gandharan Graeco-Indian artistic techniques and the stupa architecture, from which the style of the Chinese pagoda is derived. In China, builders eventually created pagodas like tall spires, with multiple roofs or cornices and many ornamental projections.
