Anteprima della tesi: SAFE DRINKING WATER

Access to safe drinking water is an important component in prevention of waterborne diseases. Diarrhea diseases are some of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Drinking water is the primary transmission route of infectious diarrheal bacteria in a rural area of Kenya (Alamanos et al, 2000). Tens of thousands of Kenyans-many of them children-die each year due to diarrhea which is as a result of unsafe drinking water (Republic of Kenya, 2001). It is estimated that 60 % of persons in developing countries live without adequate supply of drinking water (Dangerfield, 2006). Studies have shown that over 3 billion people suffer from water related diseases as a consequence of using unsafe water and exposure to inadequate sanitation worldwide (WHO, 1998). Mortality and morbidity rates would be greatly reduced if access to safe drinking water was improved.
The current water crisis in Kenya is due to periodic droughts and a general scarcity of water. The crisis is being further fueled by other ...

... disinfected with plant extracts. The three water samples treated will then be characterized to compare the efficacy of each method in removing the physico-chemical and bacteriological contamination.
3.8 Data analysis
The results from the questionnaires and structural interviewer schedule will be interpreted by the researcher. Descriptive statistics will be used in data analysis. A one way ANOVA will be used to find out if there is any significant difference in bacterial contamination of the selected water sources. Correlation coefficient will be used to find out if there is an association between the physico-chemical properties and level of bacterial contamination.
