Anteprima della tesi: The Heritage of Peace and Peace Making in Africa

In this paper, I present an overview on the Heritage of Peace and Peace Making in Africa through examples from different communities in Africa. One of the assumptions behind this paper is that the distance in time and space involved is of diminishing importance. There are many threads linking past and present, the old social order with the new and it continue to find new application in the modern situation. African Conception of Peace The African conception of peace is broad. ... African peace heritage in informing and serving its liberative purpose;
§ Reliance on rituals and community symbols in sealing peace agreements;
§ The importance of elders and relationships in regulating respectful processes, teaching of values upon which respectful relationships can be developed, and in providing real-life demonstrations of what those relationships look like in action;
§ The indispensable role of elders in passing on peace values and virtues from generation to the other;
These are living traditions that necessitates recognition. As John Mary Walligo notes in a forward to Laurenti Magesa’s book Africa Religion: The Moral Traditions of Abundant Life, one of the root causes of many anti-life forces in Africa has been the failure to embark on the movement of re-awakening the moral and religious values and construct the future on them. No sane society chooses to build its future on foreign cultures, values or systems. Every society is obliged to search deep in its history, culture, religion and morality in order to discover the values upon which its development and liberation, its civilization and its identity should be based. To do otherwise is nothing less than communal suicide (Magesa, 1998: 9).
