The notion of appropriation involves the renewal of one certain text into a separate and vastly varied context. It is predominantly concerned with evolution and an imitation of a classical work in which the relationship between themes and social affairs of the time are adapted to suite a separate audience. Through Christopher Marlowe’s ‘Dr Faustus’ and its varied appropriations, we gain an insight into the contextual and cultural differences of three vastly varied societies. Oscar Wilde’s ‘Picture of Dorian Gray’ explores late nineteenth to early twentieth century Edwardian England whilst David Frankel’s ‘Devil Wears ...... and philosophy.
