Anteprima della tesi: AN ESSAY ON CHALLANGES OF POOR SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL IN KIAMBU TOWN IN KENYA

AN ESSAY ON CHALLENGES OF POOR SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL IN KIAMBU TOWN IN KENYA. ABSTRACT. Municipal solid waste in most cities in developing countries is a serious threat to urban environment. Generation of municipal solid waste (MSW), industrial hazardous waste and biomedical waste have been increasing due to population growth, life style changes and economic development. On the other hand, waste management responses have not kept pace with the increasing quantities of waste resulting in (a) a high proportion of uncollected waste, and (b) poor standards of transportation, storage, treatment and disposal. The unsanitary methods adopted for disposal of solid wastes is a serious health concern with significant environmental, social and health costs associated with it. Open dumping of garbage facilitates the breeding of disease vectors such as flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches, rats, and other pests. However, solid waste management in the developing countries has received lesser attention from policymakers and researchers than the other environmental problems, such as air and water pollution. This paper studies the challenges of poor solid waste Kiambu town. The study is based on both secondary and primary information collected from the respective offices of their municipal council and the ...

... 9. Researchers and Scientists: Appropriate technologies in line with the nature of garbage generated need to be explored. This could be used along with the present approaches. Possible options include: Composting, since a large percentage of waste is biodegradable matter, efforts should be made to organize households to compost it. In the case of non- biodegradable waste, since it is generated in such large and increasing quantities and yet without any immediate foreseeable solution, one option could be to convert them to energy, through use of combustors or incinerators. This would serve in the meantime as other solutions are sought. The other option would be recycling.
