CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background to the Research Problem. Environmental degradation affects the air we breathe in, the water we drink and the food we consume. It also affects the general quality of our surroundings and may pose a risk to our health and well being. Control of environmental degradation because of pollution is necessary in almost all the communities and countries to protect the health of populations concerned. Environmental management involves controlling various forms that lead to environmental degradation like pollution to levels that do not pose a threat to the health of people or the environment. (Management and control of the Environmental components WHO 1989. /REP/89.1) The global Millennium Development goals urges countries both developing and developed to ensure environmental sustainability in all the sectors of economy be it industry, medicine, trade, education, information, transport and private sectors. Significance.
This will assist the Company to acquire the Dust Emissions Permit, as presently it does not have the permit to emit dust in the atmosphere. The Company will know when to reduce or regulate the dust emissions into the environment.

6.9 Gas Meter.

Gas meters for the following gases have to be installed at the preheater chambers, kiln, and atox mill. Carbon dioxide meter. Nitrogen oxides meter. Sulphur dioxide meter.Hydrocarbons meter. Carbon monoxide meter and oxygen meter. The purpose of such installations is to make sure that the accurate and approximate levels of such gases are measured and recorded so that to know the quantities of gas emissions into the environment in adherence with the gas emissions act in relation to the international standards.
