AN ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT REPORT FOR LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK 1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Using the relevant laws and regulations especially the EMCA 1999 we adhered to the Terms of Reference (TOR) for the Environmental Audit. The present negative impacts were identified as: Poaching, Encroachment, Decrease in Lesser Flamingoes, Drying of the Lake, Catchment destruction, Destruction of feeder river lines and the change of hydrological regime. The respective mitigation measures were described as follows: Reduce the strand spacing of the fence, Increase surveillance and public awareness campaigns, Rezone the town so as to reduce encroachment, Catchment area management, Pegging of the river line and Rehabilitation of waste water treatment plant and refuse disposal. Respective costs of the proposed mitigation measures were identified and the estimated to be Ksh 2.5 billion. The proposed Environmental Management Plan was also respectively done to a detailed standard. The necessary maps and photographs were included in the report. The abbreviations were also included. The audit team compromised of individuals with relevant technical background. 11. SUMMARY OF KEY FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS: The key negative impacts were identified as: Poaching, Encroachment, Decrease in Lesser Flamingoes, Drying of the lake, Catchment Destruction, Destruction of Feeder River lines, Change in hydrological regime and Poaching. Their respective mitigations were tabulated as follows: Reduce the strand spacing of the fence, increase surveillance, and public awareness campaigns, Rezone the town Reduction of pollutants to the lake, catchment area management and Legislation, Lake Nakuru catchment area management, Formulation of catchment strategy management, Formulation of catchment strategy management, Pegging of river line, Rehabilitation of waste treatment plant and refuse disposal. The cost of the mitigations were also identified and tabulated. The proposed mechanisms for implementation have been tabulated in the EMP. The measures were taken under the EMP to ensure implementation is of good, high environmental standard. Consequently we recommend the LNNP to be conserved by the KWS with all the efforts and capacity of the Kenyan government. Besides we recommend the participation of the other internal and external institutions who would be lovers of Lake Nakuru environmental aesthetics.
