BUSINESS CONSUMERISM AND CUSTOMERS RELATIONS Overview Time was when the business firm’s basic philosophy was anchored on product-orientation. Today, it has been substituted by another kind of orientation: customer orientation. In other words, the concept of regard for customers must be the key to good customer relations and ultimately to the success of the business enterprise. It does away with the phrase and concept, “business is people”. There is no business without people; and there are no people without sentiments, hopes, aspirations, and desires. The Place of the Consumer Adam Smith more than two hundred years ago stated in clear and unmistakable terms the place of the consumer in economic society. He said, “Consumption is the sole end and purpose of all production; and the interest of the producer ought to be attended to only so far as it may be necessary for promoting that of the consumer. . .” The consumer is one who utilizes the product; the customer is one who buys the product.
