TOURISM PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT IN COSTAL REGION 1.0 INTRODUCTION The initial development of Kenya as a tourist destination started at the turn of the 20thcentury, over the years, tourism development in Kenya have placed emphasis on the development of single product elements without much consideration of the changing global tourism market demands. Thus, Kenya has been offering undifferentiated tourism product based wildlife and beach tourism. Therefore, most of the tourism and hospitality facilities have mainly been developed in limited areas particularly along the Kenyan coast and in a few inland parks and reserves. The coast region has diverse resources which can be developed for alternative tourism products in order to move away from the undifferentiated form of beach tourism. A good example of a recently developed tourism product is the haller park formerly known as bamburi quarry nature park. It is a product that was developed in a disused quarry by a Swiss agronomist Dr. Rene Haller. The unique tourist ...





... is needs to match the global market demands. A differentiated and integrated tourism product can be developed inorder to make away from the concentrated beaches. Along the coast , alternative tourism products can be developed from the underutilized resources such as cultures (Swahili culture). This can serve to satisfy tourist in developed countries with desire to trace their ancestral roots in East Africa.
