Slavery was the major cause of the American Civil war because for many years slavery was mostly concentrated in the southern colonies which had the growing of tobacco as its major production therefore slave trade was chiefly for labor and as Sydney said "Had there been no slavery, there would have been no war. Had there been no moral condemnation of slavery, there would have been no war." (Ahlstrome, 1972). During this time, up to a third of the population was composed of slaves as compared to the south where slaves accounted for approximately 2% of the population. Before the civil war which was credited for bringing to an end of slave trade and slavery as whole, the United States economy depended on slavery which was composed of Africans and American. ... slaves working on the farms, the productivity would have been small therefore making the slave owners poor. It is therefore evident that though slavery was a major contributor of the civil war, some factors mostly the tension and the political difference between the republicans of the north and the democrats of the south clearly fostered the inevitability of the war.

One can not deny that the issue of slavery in American history is thoroughly etched that one can not discussed American civil war without linking it to slavery. Lincoln's Emancipation edict has been a great move to abolish slavery.
