the history of automobile

Only a memory ago cars were ungainly collections of crude machinery, their passengers huddled on top of them, uncomfortably exposed to ridicule, dust and the elements which were unsafe at any speed. Today, the shape of cars has changed as radically as their impact on the society. The influences on car design have been complex and numerous. They have ranged from the whim of fashion to advances in engineering that have increased performance and reduced size; from methods of construction to the science of aerodynamics; from the rigours of legislation and cost of control to the caprice of each new generation of motorists. This write-up covers the developments and set-backs, the trends, restriction and history in summary that have made the modern cars.

Preview of the essay: the history of automobile

No one in vented the car. Like mankind, it evolved from what had gone before. Its next of kin were the horse-drawn carriage, which had already been propelled by steam, and the 19th-century tricycle, which was simply a bicycle with an extra wheel for dignity. As our ancestors lost the look of the ape, so cars shed their resemblance to the coach.
Cars have been shaped by many influences ...

... Mercedes Benz 300SL sport car has vertically opening doors and the engine canted at 45 degrees to lower body. Rover’s JET 1 establishes a gas turbine car record of 152 mph. 1954 Cadillac uses twin headlamps. Buick uses wrap-round windscreen. Bosch, of Germany, produces petrol injection for 4-stroke car, the Merceded-Benz 300SL. 1955 Citroen’s DS19 has replaceable body panels, glass-fibre roof, hydro- pneumatic suspension, front disc brakes, hydraulic gear change, steering and automatic clutch. 1956 Jensen 541 is the first British road car with disc brakes on all four wheels. 1957 Chrysler makes the Auto-pilot, a push-button device to hold constant throttle positions for motorway driving (auto cruise). Felix wankel, of Germany, runs his first roary petrol engine. 1958 DAF, of Holland, produces Variomatic automatic transmission which drives through belts on expand pulleys. 1959 BMC introduces the mini with front drive, transverse engine and independent rubber suspension.
