THE LEVEL OF EFFECTIVENESS OF THE REMEDIAL READING PROGRAM AMONG NON-READERS OF GUESANG ELEMENTARY SCHOOL:

One of the most indispensable skills which every student in the elementary level should acquire is the ability to read. It has been said that reading is the avenue through which most students acquire knowledge, values and attitudes. Inasmuch as reading skill is an indispensable tool in learning content subjects and since pupils in the elementary are now on the transition stage of their formal schooling, it is primordial that they acquire a considerable degree of mastery in reading. The ability to read is a fundamental skill that pupils in the elementary level ought to develop because it will help them unleash their understanding in the other subjects that use English as the medium of instruction. Failure to develop a good grasp of the written text regardless on the nature of the subject will ineluctably hinder the learner to access the other areas of learning such as Mathematics and Science. More importantly, since they are at the formative stage of learning the basic Rs and at the preparatory stage to much more complicated learning tasks in the secondary level, it is extremely important that any deficiency in this area should be properly addressed with by applying the appropriate learning and teaching remedies. This problem should not go unnoticed. Needless to say, one should not allow a scenario of pupils graduating in elementary without being equipped on the essentials of reading.
