EXPLOITATION OF WIND ENERGY A large majority, about 64 % of the Swedish population prefers wind power if new power generating plants have to be built. This is as per a national opinion poll conducted in 2002 by an American firm, Steadman. However, there is a Nimbi effect where people say wind power is ok, as long as it is not in their backyard. This high public approval has facilitated the adoption of many wind poor projects in the recent years. There is largely a positive attitude among the civil working class in local communities and county’s administrations. As a result the parliament of Sweden in 2004 set a planning target for generation of wind power specifying the targets down to local communities.
