But reasonably, they regarded it to be less consistent or dependable as a pain reliever as compared to opium together with the opium derivatives. In addition, it could not be injected directly into the blood due to the fact that it was not soluble in water.  Then, towards the end of the century, the first artificial pain reliever, aspirin, together with the first artificial hypnotic, phenobarbital, were available.
