SOUND LEVEL METER

The sound level meter consists of a microphone, an operational amplifier, an analogue to digital converter, decoder drive and a display. Most sound level meters are provided with a variety of facilities such as weighing network and peak detector for precision measurement. The sound level meter is made for use in the following areas: 1. Measurement of road traffic noise. 2. Measurement of noise from bars and pubs especially hose near residential areas. 3. Measurement of machinery noise. 4. Measurement of industrial noise near residential places.

INTRODUCTION 1.0 Background The sound level meter consists of a microphone, an operational amplifier, an analogue to digital converter, decoder drive and a display. For the meter to conform to the British standards requirements, it has to be of high precision. Due to this factor the microphone to be used has to be omni directional, calibrated by the process of reciprocity, by Raleigh disc or by comparison with standards which has been calibrated by one of this methods. 1.1 Block Diagram Of The Sound Level Meter [pic] 1 Microphone A microphone is a transducer which converts ambient acoustical vibrations into electrical signal. The project shall use a crystal microphone. This microphone has a sensitivity of 1mV/Pa and an impedance of 600Ω. 2 Operational Amplifier An Op Amp is an ...

... sound is measured by use of a crystal microphone. Sounds falling on the diaphragm of the microphone makes it vibrate, moving back and forth hence subjecting the crystal to mechanical force. The sensitivity of the microphone can be regulated using the 10KΩ resistor. The alternating voltage is then passed to the operational amplifier to provide enough gain before it is measured. The amplified signal goes into the ADC for conversion. The reference voltage will govern the range of measurements achieved since it can be altered using the voltage reference pin 9 on the ADC. The incoming signal is compared to the reference and an 8 bit output is given. The result is then passed to the decoder where it is decoded for display at the seven segment display.
