SWITCHED MODE POWER SUPPLY

All electronic instruments, computers, radio and telecommunication equipments require source of power in order to function correctly, yet the power supply is normally the most neglected part of the complete system. All the above mentioned equipments depend for its correct operation upon the availability of stable, well-regulated direct power supplies. The main requirements for a power supply are good regulation, low noise and ripple, low output impedance and output short-circuit protection.

1.0 CHAPTER ONE 1.1 Introduction All electronic instruments, computers, radio and telecommunication equipments require source of power in order to function correctly, yet the power supply is normally the most neglected part of the complete system. All the above mentioned equipments depend for its correct operation upon the availability of stable, well-regulated direct power supplies. The main requirements for a power supply are good regulation, low noise and ripple, low output impedance and output short-circuit protection. Therefore, in almost all cases, the power fed to the electronic equipments is a converted dc voltage. Thus, switched mode power supply is often used because it has a much higher efficiency than a linear supply (typically 65% to 90%) and, because of this; it is both smaller and lighter in weight. Although the benefits of switched-mode techniques are great, there is a penalty paid in the increased noise present at both input and output of the supply due to the power switching techniques. Also the associated control circuitry is much more complicated than its linear counterpart. There are two main kinds of SMPS, known respectively as the forward converter and flywheel converter. In this ...

... 0.01µf [pic] [pic] In order to have a square wave signal, R4 must be greater than R3. Therefore, selecting R3 to be 1.5KΩ [pic] 3.9KΩ resistor for R4 is available and will be used. It’s recommended to connect the voltage control terminal (terminal 5) to ground when not in use via a 10nf capacitor. C4 = 10nF IC1 is LM555 which is a time IC. IC2 and IC3 are voltage comparators and LM311 IC will be used. R5 and ZD2 set the voltage reference which will be compared with the error voltage. Setting a reference voltage of 2.4V, Zener diode BZX79C ZV4 will be used for ZD2 rated Vz=2.4V and IZ= 5mA
